On Monday, I watched a woman, put two trash cans in the back of her pick-up truck and drive them 50 feet down her driveway. Behavior and habits are hard to break until you have to. During the 1990s and early 2000s use of cars in Netherlands increased as salaries increased. Same thing in Belgium and other parts of EU. They are not biking saints - they will show off with SUVs and Landcruisers that never get "off-road". We all need to change or kill ourselves and the planet!
What if everyone biked to work?
This video, of morning rush hour in Utrecht, Netherlands is a glimpse into what a city could look like if 33% of all trips happened by bike. Pretty incredible.
In the last year, I finally conquered my fear of biking (mostly from never really learning properly) and consider myself a seasonal bike commuter. It's incredible to imagine what our city streets could look like if bikes ruled the road.
