Israelis Against Israeli Settlements
Israeli police at a demonstration by about 5,000 Israeli and Palestinian peace activists in East Jerusalem on Saturday. The police kept most of the demonstrators from approaching homes occupied by Jewish families in the neighborhood. Protesters opposed to the evictions have gathered in the neighborhood each week for the past six months, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, which posted video of Saturday’s demonstration on its Web site and reported that there were about 5,000 Israelis and Palestinians there. One of the rally’s organizers told the newspaper, “we are all united against the ‘Judaization’ of East Jerusalem.” The newspaper said that about 200 counter-demonstrators were kept away from the rally by Israeli police officers.
