Break-Bone Fever (Dengue) - Devil's Own Disease on Comeback Trail
Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Rush treated an outbreak in 1780 Philadelphia and, observing the misery afflicting its victims, called it “Break Bone Fever.” In Swahili, however, it was still known as ka-dinga pepo, a disease of the devil. It was but a short linguistic jump for it to become known worldwide as dengue fever. |

President Obama on the Gulf Coast
The Gulf Coast _ President Barack Obama Yesterday, I visited Caminada Bay in Grand Isle, Louisiana -- one of the first places to feel the devastation wrought by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While I was here, at Camerdelle's Live Bait shop, I met with a group of local residents and small business owners. What we owe them is a commitment by our nation to match the resilience they have shown. That is our mission. And it is one we will fulfill. |
Gazan's Grief "Highjacked" for Internal Turkish Politics
Instead of actually working to help people in Gaza, Turkish activists and the Prime Minister of Turkey now begin to look and sound like many Middle Easter politicians who have "used" the plight of Palestinians to bolster their domestic image of protector of Palestine, Islam, and Arabs and then once in power "ignored" actually helping Palestinians.
Erdogan must not be delivering on "pledges" to improve life for people in Turkey, so he is trying to be a hero without actually having to risk anything.
We've been here, seen that, done that before. Palestinians don't need new paper and postcard heroes, then need real support and peace.

BP Cousin - Chevron Has Protesting Proxie Holders - Ejected and Arrested
Chevron denies access to shareholder representatives in bid to silence truth about its human right and environmental impacts The air was thick with contempt in front of Chevron's Houston headquarters as these individuals were escorted out by smirking security officials after being informed that their papers did not meet the company's qualifications for entry. My thought, watching these community leaders exit the building in compliance, was that Chevron had just made a major strategic miscalculation. |

5 million Congolese have died to make your cell phone work
Ending the Conflict Minerals Trade the world's deadliest conflict since World War II is still occurring -- in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is estimated that over the last 11 years this conflict has claimed more than five million lives. Secretary Clinton, who visited the region last year, has charged her team with doing whatever we can to help stop this conflict. armed groups and military units in some parts of the region have killed, raped, tortured, and abducted numerous civilians and burned and looted their villages in mineral rich areas, particularly near mines. They have also forced civilians, including children, to mine (or forced civilians to provide them with funding derived from the sale of) tin, tungsten, tantalum -- metals that are found in cell phones, laptops, digital cameras, and other popular electronics |
