BP, Shell, Exxon, Big Pharma firms all contribute to arts for several reasons: It tends to buy a get-out-of-jail free card from some potential critics who count on their money; it enables some board members feel good about being associated with otherwise scummy firms; some actually like and support the arts. Thankfully - it is harder to buy the get-out-of-jail free card because there are so many people connecting the dots!
