Let's hope that President Obama and the new Secretary of Homeland Security act quickly to do right by the children rounded up and detained like adult felons and with no way to contact their families.
On February 4, the Women’s Refugee Commission and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP released Halfway Home: Unaccompanied Children in Immigration Custody, the first in-depth investigation into conditions of care for this vulnerable population since the Homeland Security Act of 2002 ordered a transfer of custody to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). The report details the challenges that exist in protecting the safety and basic rights of these vulnerable children, and reveals a few critical areas that warrant significant improvement.
