Texas woman files federal lawsuit after birth in solitary confinement results in baby’s death
Texas woman files federal lawsuit after birth in solitary confinement results in baby’s death
The claim further goes on to describe Guerrero’s night in solitary confinement, where she tried in vain to get medical attention all night and ended up delivering a baby that was not breathing and had its umbilical cord wrapped around its neck.
Though shocking, I wish I could say this news is surprising. Given what we know about access to reproductive health care in prison and the criminalization of drug-addicted pregnant women, it really isn’t – it is a mere continuation of the long list of degradations and indignities people suffer when imprisoned. I’ve quoted Cece McDonald on this and before and will do so again: prisons aren’t safe for anybody.

Israeli forces deny Nablus farmers access to fields to harvest wheat | Maan News Agency Israeli forces on Saturday morning prevented Palestinian farmers from accessing their fields to harvest wheat south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, a Palestinian official said.
Ghasan Daghlas, who monitors settlement-related activities in the northern West Bank, told Ma'an that dozens of Palestinian farmers were on their way to harvest wheat in the area of Lafjan near the village of Aqraba when they were stopped.
Daghlas said that Israeli troops blocked the farmers and told them that they could not access their fields because the area had been declared a closed military zone, with no further explanation.

Apocalyptic Scenes in Andranondambo, Madagascar as Villages Fight for Land Properties · Global Voices
Apocalyptic Scenes in Andranondambo, Madagascar as Villages Fight for Land Properties · Global Voices L'Express Mada reports that the entire village of Andranondambo in the South of Madagascar was destroyed [fr] during an inter-village conflict that stem from land rights dispute. From May 20 to 22, the civilian conflict left no residents of the village alive. One of the military policeman recalls [fr]:
When we arrived, a dog was eating what was left of a corpse. In a nearby home destroyed by fire, we found more corpses. The stink was unbearable. Even the public school and the church were ravaged. All the materials from houses were taken apart.
The land dispute started in 1991 when an important source of sapphire and mica was discovered in the Andranondambo. The rush of land miners pushed local villagers away to another village Ambatotsivala. Since then, the two villages have been at odds over land rights but the conflict has never reached such a harrowing level of violence until recently.

The White Death, Revived - In The Fray
The White Death, Revived - In The Fray
Paul Nunn, the WHO’s TB coordinator, says that these deadly strains have cropped up in certain European countries, too, though the reports have yet to be published. “If the health system of the world fails, the highly resistant strains will replace the old,” he adds. “We’ll see a worsening of the situation if nothing is done.” On the other hand, it may be only when the resistant strains become a major problem in rich countries that the profit-seeking pharmaceutical industry will take notice and pour real money into the development of potent new treatments.
Without effective drugs to combat the most resistant strains, doctors may have to revert to remedies from an earlier era. Udwadia recalls his first patient with untreatable TB. Twenty-six years old, she had spent the last five years trying a variety of anti-TB drugs, all of which had failed. As a last resort, she underwent a pneumonectomy, a high-risk medical procedure to remove a lung. The woman later died of complications from the surgery. The procedure had not been used on tuberculosis patients since the introduction of antibiotic treatments six decades ago.

Afghan Women's Writing Project | Everyone Has Advice for an Afghan Girl
Afghan Women's Writing Project | Everyone Has Advice for an Afghan Girl
As a girl in Afghanistan I get a lot of advice from different kinds of people about how to behave. Everyone has different opinions because they grew up in different families. When I was in school, my teachers told me to study hard, wear your uniform, be clean, respect your family and teachers. This advice was very good and I follow it always. But I live in a part of Kabul where people have different ideas about how to be a good girl.
One day while I was going to my English class I met a neighbor woman who was out getting some water. She asked me where I was going. “I’m going to my English Center,” I said.
“What is English?” she asked.
“It’s a language like Dari,” I said.
“You want to learn English?”
“Yes. If we can talk in more languages, we might solve more of our problems. English is an international language so I want to learn it. Also I love the English language.
“Who teaches you this English?” my neighbor asked.
“A boy,” I answered. “He is very intelligent and teaches us well.”
I have answered these questions many times from my neighbors. I always tell them that I love studying. It is my passion to learn new things. Studying is very important, I tell them. You will know your rights. You can solve your problems by yourself and also help other people. You can bring peace to your country. You can do all this, but you need to be an educated person.
My neighbor was surprised that day and she started to give advice.
“You want to learn a language, you are going outside, and a boy is teaching you? That is very bad for a girl! First, you should leave your English Center and don’t go outside. If it’s really so important to go, you should wear a big scarf that covers all your body. You should help your mother, work at home, listen to your family, especially your father and brother, because they are the men in your family. How old are you?”
“I am sixteen.”
“You should be married,” she said, “that is important. But you are going outside and studying. That is enough studying for you.” And then she left.
Her advice surprised me. Her ideas were so different from mine and from my family. My parents also give me advice about how to be a good girl. They tell me to respect my family, teachers, and all adults, to help people, study hard, and be strong and patient. They also tell me not to be close friends with boys, not to go out after 5 pm, to wear my scarf when I do go outside and to pray five times a day. Above all, they tell me to be honest and kind, and not to escape from problems but confront them. Don’t run away but try to solve them and learn from the experience. My parents believe that if you follow this advice, you will be successful in your life. My teachers’ advice is the same. Don’t do anything taboo in Islam.
If I have children, I will pass on their advice. But I don’t like it when my neighbors tell me I should stop learning. I don’t want to listen to this advice. Education is like sunshine in life, it lets us see a better way to live.

Boko Haram threat: Leaders vow to wage 'total war' on 'Al Qaeda of West Africa' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Boko Haram threat: Leaders vow to wage 'total war' on 'Al Qaeda of West Africa' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
West African leaders have agreed to work together to wage "total war" on Boko Haram, saying the Nigerian Islamist group had become a regional Al Qaeda that threatened them all.
Nigeria, its neighbours - Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin - and Western officials met in Paris to flesh out a plan enabling them for the first time to share intelligence, coordinate action and monitor borders.
It comes as a suspected Boko Haram attack was carried out on a Chinese work site in northern Cameroon, killing at least one Cameroonian soldier with 10 others feared kidnapped.
Although Boko Haram has been fighting for five years, carrying out bombings and attacks on civilians and security forces, the kidnapping last month of more than 200 schoolgirls in the north-east has focused world attention on them.
Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan says Boko Haram is no longer a local threat, but has become West Africa's Al Qaeda.
"Boko Haram is no longer a local terrorist group, it is operating clearly as an Al Qaeda operation, it is an Al Qaeda of West Africa," Mr Jonathan told reporters in Paris.

Doctors Reattach Teen's Arm Severed Cleaning Pasta Machine: Gothamist
Last month, a teenager employed at an upstate NY Italian restaurant severed his arm while cleaning an industrial pasta maker. Brett Bouchard, 17, was cleaning the machine at Violi's Restaurant on April 24th when his right arm became caught and was severed at the elbow. "It wasn't a sharp cut," one of his surgeons, Dr. Kyle Eberlin, told CBS. "His arm had actually been sort of pulled off which makes it a more difficult injury to treat." Despite that, doctors were able to reattach the arm.

Red Grapes: This deeply hued fruit contains resveratrol, a powerful compound that blocks the enzymes that contribute to tissue degeneration. The evidence: In lab experiments at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, resveratrol protected against the kind of cartilage damage that causes back pain.
Although the research is preliminary, it can't hurt to fill up on foods rich in resveratrol, including blueberries and cranberries, which contain other powerful antioxidants as well.

Poor Safety, Bad Mozzarella Leads To 13 Arrests
Poor Safety, Bad Mozzarella Leads To 13 Arrests
Police in Italy have shut down a mozzarella factory and arrested 13 people after finding that prized local buffalo milk was being cut with cheaper imported cow milk. Authorities also found that the cheese, produced near the southern town of Caserta, contained as much as 20 times permissible levels of bacteria, said Carabinieri Police Major Alfonso Pannone. Police also shut down seven stores selling the cheese in the Campania region, which includes Naples.
Milky white buffalo mozzarella is prized by Italians and tourists. It carries a special label supposed to guarantee quality and protect its reputation. Among those arrested were two public health service veterinarians who allegedly tipped the factory to upcoming inspections. The probe began after a worker lost some of his fingers because of safety flaws.

Vandals sprayed anti-Christian graffiti on a Jerusalem church on Friday, despite Israeli police stepping up security around religious sites ahead of a visit by Pope Francis later this month.
"Price tag... King David for the Jews... Jesus is garbage" was spray-painted in Hebrew on the wall of St George's, a Romanian Orthodox church near an ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood.
Israeli police said that "Death to Arabs" was found written on a house in the Old City in East Jerusalem, and swastikas were scrawled on the wall of a west Jerusalem apartment.

The meaning of this is simple: Netanyahu is prepared to gamble on the democratic nature of the State of Israel to stay in office and reap political benefits. The very person who came out in his previous term against the uninhibited laws proposed by Knesset members from the right, who attempted to cause harm to the legal system, has abandoned all that is left of revisionist Zionist leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s respectful and honoring manner and the heritage of the late Prime Minister Menachem Begin in the Likud.

Hong Kong reported a new case of influenza A/H7N9 last week and the CDC warned that the virus could make its way to the U.S.
Influenza A/H7N9, a new strain of the avian influenza first identified in China in 2013, kills one in three people infected. The virus moved across China in two successive waves, crossing the border into Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia.
The privately held Arbor Vita Corporation announced this week that the FDA issued an emergency use authorization for its AVC A/H7N9 influenza rapid test for the presumptive detection of the virus in patients with signs and symptoms of respiratory infection in conjunction with epidemiological risk factors.

“Without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill,” says Dr Keiji Fukuda, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Health Security. “Effective antibiotics have been one of the pillars allowing us to live longer, live healthier, and benefit from modern medicine. Unless we take significant actions to improve efforts to prevent infections and also change how we produce, prescribe and use antibiotics, the world will lose more and more of these global public health goods and the implications will be devastating.”
