Stones Thrown at Afghan Women Protesters

And we have troops there to protect their way of life. I thought troops were sent to get Osama bin Laden out - beyond that we ought to go until the Afghans are serious about joining the 21st century.

How Dangerous are the Taliban to the US?

Foreign Affairs article and response both of which are well worth reading - if you are rethinking our involvement in Afghanistan.

The very notion that al Qaeda needs a secure geographic base to carry out its terrorist operations, moreover, is questionable. After all, the operational base for 9/11 was in Hamburg, Germany. Conspiracies involving small numbers of people require communication, money, and planning -- but not a major protected base camp.

Former head of Texas Criminal Justice: time to reform system!

Re: "Restoring Justice -- Lawmakers move urgent reform closer to reality," Sunday Editorials.
I join you in thanking and congratulating state Sen. Royce West and Sen. Rodney Ellis for their leadership in helping innocent people who may have spent years in prison for crimes they did not commit, and for establishing an innocence commission to lessen the chances of an innocent person being sent to prison -- or worse, to death row.

Japanese Raccons found with Bird Flu

What this shows is that the h5n1 virus is present in many different species. It breaks out in a form that is deadly to both animals and people when the host animal is gathered together in large numbers. When chickens, ducks, or geese are factory farmed (thousands raised at same time and housed for egg laying or held for delivery to live markets), the natural system "thinks" the species's population is too large and is exhibitig stress that calls for a "system" response to bring the flock back into balance. The system response to re-create balance is influenza which kills weaker or stressed birds and reestablishes balance. Repeated human intervention causes greater system responses until it may reach pandemic levels.

This is the first time mammals in this country have been found with bird flu virus antibodies, which develop as a result of infection. Before the discovery, only birds had been found with bird flu antibodies.

The research team, which presented a paper on its findings at a conference of the Japanese Society of Veterinary Science in Utsunomiya on Saturday, warned that infected raccoons could introduce the virus into chicken farms and noted that countermeasures were needed.

It is believed that the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus is highly likely to mutate into a new type of influenza. In Japan, there have previously been reports of domestic chickens, wild whooper swans, jungle crows and mountain hawk-eagles infected with the virus.

Bird Flu Cases in Egyptian Children May Be a Crucial Step in Pandemic Launch

Uh oh! The rapid expansion of the global poultry market is continuing to fuel the next pandemic, it appears.

John Jabbour, a World Health Organization (WHO) emerging diseases specialist based in Cairo, said the Egyptian government and the WHO are planning a study to find out if subclinical or asymptomatic cases have been occurring, according to the story.

Jabbour said the occurrence of asymptomatic cases would be worrisome because it could give the undetected virus more time to mutate in human hosts, Reuters reported.

"If there is any subclinical case in Egypt, the aim is to treat immediately to stop the reproduction of the virus," he told Reuters. "Because whether [through] mutation or reassortment, this will lead to the pandemic strain."

Israel's new ultra-nationalist foreign minister has said it is not bound by a US-sponsored 2007 agreement to reach a peace deal with the Palestinians.

"The Annapolis conference, it has no validity," Avigdor Lieberman said.

He was speaking at a handover ceremony at the foreign ministry, prompting his predecessor Tzipi Livni to interrupt and diplomats to shift uncomfortably.
