Peace in Gaza and Israel Now, Not Tomorrow!

Israel's PM: No truce now, time is not ripe. If rockets and bombs falling on Gazans and Israelis were olives, you'd say the time is ripe! Peace Now! Talk Now!

Doctors without Borders reports on top human disasters/needs this past year

Our memory is still too short and when a crisis fades from the TV, many of us think it is over. Sadly, this is not true, it is just old news that so many young and old are dying or about to die.

Illegal Immigrants Too Long on ICE

The people talked about in this report are accused of breaking immigration regulations but are not felons. We should be able to process these people's cases without putting them in jail with felons for months and months - We'd expect that for an American citizen illegal in France or Germany - would we not?

U.S. De-Regulates Factory Farm Pollution

http://us.oneworld.net/article/359152-us-exempts-factory-farms-from-regulation

WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (OneWorld.net) - On the heels of a decision to allow factory farms to apply for permits to discharge waste into waterways, the Bush administration on Thursday exempted the industry from reporting hazardous air emissions to the federal government, prompting a consumer group to accuse the outgoing president of undoing years of environmental protections and "putting millions of Americans at risk."

Now we know what the Bush League really thinks about the American people - undiluted cow plop is more valuable than the rest of us, or "Let them drink plop!"

In The Long Wait for Progress: Women and Economic and Social Equality, Century Foundation Senior Fellow Beverly Goldberg analyzes the substantial gap in wages between men and women, and then measures that gap in the context of women’s educational achievements and the continuing discrimination against women in the workplace, with attention to the impact of the issues of health and child care. This analysis of the complex and interrelated problems facing working women reveals both that women are subject to pay discrimination and that the inequities between white women and women of color are as striking as those between women and men. Bird Flu kills 23rd in Egypt - Culling does Not Work!

Dec 16, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – Egypt's health ministry has announced that a 16-year-old girl died of an H5N1 avian influenza infection, the country's first human case in about 8 months, according to a report today from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The girl died at Assiut University Hospital yesterday in central Egypt's Asyut governorate, the WHO reported. She got sick on Dec 8 and was admitted 3 days later to a district hospital before she was transferred to the university facility on Dec 13. She becomes Egypt's 51st H5N1 case and its 23rd death.

She became ill after exposure to sick and dead poultry in her household, the WHO report said. The girl is from a village near the city of Asyut, the governorate's capital, Xinhua, China's state news agency, reported today.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing by Egypt's Central Public Health Laboratory on the girl's samples was positive for the H5N1 virus, and the findings were confirmed yesterday by the US Naval Medical Research Unit 3 in Cairo, according to the WHO.

Egypt's last H5N1 case was reported in mid April when a 2-year-old boy became ill after having contact with sick and dead poultry, according to previous reports.

Animal health experts have said that the H5N1 virus is endemic in Egypt's poultry. The country has the most human avian influenza cases outside of the Asian countries that have been hardest hit by the virus.

The girl's death brings the WHO's global H5N1 count to 391 cases and 247 deaths.

Why culling does not prevent spread of bird flu

Told you all this for two years of more - think in new ways or get ready to bury millions from next flu pandemic!

"The villagers tried to hide their poultry that survived the virus," said Bishon Chowdhury, a senior local government official.

"Also, many resisted because the workers arrived without spot payments for the culled birds," he said.

Villagers and poultry farmers are being paid between 20 and 50 rupees (between $0.50 and $1) for each bird killed, depending on its age.

War and Peace: Perceptions from Children in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Kate Holt/ Save The Children

Recent resurgence of conflict in eastern Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) between the Congolese army and rebel forces led by General Laurent Nkunda, has caused a major new wave of population displacement in a region that has seen nearly constant turmoil in the past ten years.

Up to 300,000 internally displaced persons are flooding into existing camps or staying with families, in churches or schools. Approximately half of the displaced are said to be children.

Bush League Races to Do as Much Harm as Possible in Name of Ideological Zeal!

The only part of this that is news, is that it took 7 plus years for this and other Inspector Generals to work up the courage to tell the truth.

Once the debacle of Katrina began, it should have been obvious to everyone that ideology not competence, being law abiding, or having common decency was the hallmark of nearly all of the Bush League helpers.

The Bering Sea I knew growing up is vanishing before my eyes. The local communities here are having trouble finding fish to eat so they can survive. Baby fur seals are washing onto our beaches - dying from starvation. Animals like the walrus seem to have left the area altogether. The pollock population is on the verge of collapse and, if that happens, many of the animals like fur seals and the endangered Steller sea lion will disappear along with it.

US Soldier Seeks Asylum in Germany

He served one tour in Iraq but what he has learned since, leads him to say "no" to second deployment.

ndre Shepherd, 31, has become the first American soldier to seek asylum from the United States in Germany after deserting the US Army. He cited the atrocities and illegalities of the war in Iraq, as well as President Bush's role in launching an invasion on the basis of "no legal grounds whatsoever."

Andre Shepherd: seeking asylum

He said he had served willingly in 2004, but knowing what he does now, feels he cannot serve a second time. He was working as an Apache helicopter mechanic in Tikrit, but quit after witnessing the "mass of destruction" caused to Iraq by the military machine he was helping to maintain.

Germany was significant
Mr Shepherd said he chose to seek asylum in Germany for several reasons: he was stationed in Germany when he decided to desert and couldn't find a way back to the US.
