Science and Greed Will Deliver Next Pandemic

Greed and science do not make good partners. Breed birds to supposedly be immune to one type of avian flu opens the door to millions of birds and perhaps people be wiped out by a disease that the genetically modified birds do not have any immunity to -- That's why nature favors diversity to protect the whole!

And On and On It Goes - Bird Flu - we have it again

Nations all over the globe who have been struck by avian flu, note they have it, kill thousands of birds, then proclaim they are bird flu free and then later on, of course, a new outbreak is reported because the methods being used do not work - that's why a new pandemic is just a matter of time - unless leaders get out of their boxes

STAMFORD - When Beatrice Chodosh and Ana Maria Badash set out to screen a movie about sweatshops, they hoped the film would change the way people think about immigration.

The women met their goal Sunday, when their group, Coalition of Residents and Immigrants in Solidarity, screened the documentary "Made In L.A." at Ferguson Library, Chodosh said. About 60 people attended the event, despite a screening time that coincided with the annual big-balloon parade.

Josephine's Journey

© WHO/Chris Black

There was no maternity ward or flowers for Josephine Nyirandayimana when her child was born. Instead there was a flight from danger, clinging onto her other child while leaving their village near Masisi behind. They arrived in a makeshift camp set up in a muddy field some 35 km away to the south, near Shasha. Josephine's baby was born soon after by caesarean section at Kirotshe Hospital where she now is recuperating.

The current crisis in North Kivu is having a major impact on the health of the thousands of people who have fled their homes, by disrupting access to what should be readily available health services, such as safe deliveries. Reproductive and maternal health services, immunizations, basic hygiene and sanitation - all essential areas if health care that many of us take for granted but that are under extreme threat in the Kivus.

Make Those Chicken Nuggets Extra Well Done!

Greed and corruption may facilitate the spread of the next flu pandemic that could kill millions. Does KFC or your local Thai restaurant use chicken nuggets from Thailand - make 'em extra crispy to be sure the flu is dead. Danger from cooked birds is slight actually but it illustrates how hard it is for governments to protect against the worst that pandemics can bring us.

Ohio Jurors Beginning to Have Difficulty with Death Penalty

Jurors Find Difficulty with Prospect of Handing Down Death Sentences

Ohio’s Franklin County (Columbus) has been experiencing a steady decline in death penalty indictments and death sentences as jurors are increasingly choosing sentences of life in prison without parole and prosecutors are seeking fewer death sentences. In a recent capital case, the judge had a difficult time finding jurors who would likely follow state law and consider a death sentence. One prospective juror, a 36-year-old truck driver, explained that while he favors the death penalty, he would have a hard time handing down a death penalty verdict because, “It would haunt me for the rest of my life.”

Lack of qualified defense lawyers could unravel capital sentences

Michael Anthony Archuleta
Concerned about the lack of qualified lawyers willing to represent indigent death-row inmates, the Utah Supreme Court warned Friday it might be forced to reverse capital sentences.

In the case of condemned killer Michael Anthony Archuleta, a unanimous court said low pay and the complexity of such cases have shrunk the pool of Utah attorneys who will accept them. Associate Chief Justice Michael Wilkins wrote the justices may soon be "forced" to rule a lack of able and willing attorneys is grounds to reverse a death sentence and impose life without parole instead.

State lawmakers have the duty to provide adequate resources to train and compensate death-penalty lawyers, the high court said.
